Artist's Statement:

"Read My Armour" is a meditation on resilience as a lived, cumulative process rather than a singular act. The figure presents not as a hero in motion, but as a record—an archive of impact, adaptation, and endurance. The surface is intentionally worked to suggest a history written directly into the body: abrasion, layering, and repair become both material and metaphor.

The “armour” is not pristine or ceremonial. It is irregular, asymmetrical, and visibly earned. Each protrusion, texture, and weight-bearing form implies an encounter—moments of pressure, conflict, or survival that have not been erased but absorbed. The red shoulder elements function as both protection and burden, evoking vulnerability as much as defense. They sit heavily, almost organically, suggesting that what protects us can also mark us.

The face remains composed and forward-facing, resisting overt expression. This restraint is deliberate. Rather than dramatizing pain, the work focuses on the quiet permanence of having endured. The figure does not ask for empathy; it asks to be read. Its presence asserts that identity is shaped less by the events themselves than by the accumulation of responses to them.

Material contrasts—matte versus textured, smooth planes against embedded forms—reinforce the tension between inner self and external experience. The base grounds the figure in stillness, emphasizing that resilience is not always dynamic; often, it is the act of remaining.

Ultimately, Read My Armour invites viewers to consider their own surfaces: what has hardened, what has been carried forward, and what remains visible after time has done its work. The piece proposes that strength is not the absence of damage, but the visible integration of it.

Owning a free-standing sculpture also means living with a breakable investment — fired clay is durable but unforgiving in a fall. Secure the piece to a steady surface, keep it out of high-traffic toddler or pet zones, and document it in your home insurance the way you would any irreplaceable item.

Important Shipping Note: Price shown (without shipping) is the price for you to pick up this sculpture within a 80 mile radius of Los Angeles, California and meet the artist.
